HERE'S AN INTERESTING FACT... MID-JULY IN SPORTS

With the conclusion of yesterday's games, baseball heads off to the All-Star Break. For four days, no games with season spanning consequences are played. Except for the All-Star Game, although even with the raised stakes that whichever league wins it gets home field advantage in the World Series, the game's meaning is debatable at best.

But the All-Star Break signals the end of the first half of the baseball season. Even though fifteen weeks have wrapped up leaving only eleven to go. And every team has played at least 91 games. Ah, semantics!

But I didn't write this column to talk about math. No, the All-Star Break also gives way to a unique period in American sports. This is the only time of the year when none of the four major sports are going on. No baseball, no football, no basketball, no hockey. No playoff games or regular season games. With the sole exception of the All-Star Game, it's a sports drought for the next four days.

So I've got no idea what I'm going to write about for the next couple days. I'll probably think of something while I watch grown men see how long they can balls for tonight.
